Shoe shopping can be both a dream and a nightmare for some people. With hundreds of styles, colours, and prices to choose from, it can be complicated. From stylish summer sandals that won't give you blisters to the elusive winter boot that's both warm and trendy, the quest for the perfect pair of shoes can seem never-ending. And as the shoe boxes pile up on your shelves, so do the credit card bills.

Saving money on shoes depends on making small changes in how you shop and where you shop. It’s good to know that you can be kind to your feet without having a devastating effect on your wallet. If you can adjust the way that you shop and the styles that you shop for, you'll be able to save a lot of money.

Fortunately, you can control your budget without completely giving up your shoe habits. Here are tips for saving money while staying stylish from the ankle down.

Quality Check: Look for stitching, rather than glue, at the edges. Check for heels that wobble, have loose threads or are discoloured. Likewise, opt for genuine leather when possible, and ensure you aren't overpaying for cheaper, plastic styles. Finally, make sure you're getting adequate arch support!

Are Those Boots Made for Walking?: Don't just check footwear out in the floor mirror; give each pair a serious test run in the store. Try crouching to see if they grip your foot or fall off. Walk at different speeds to see if the shoes will rub your feet raw.

If you buy your dream pair and then realise they're too small, take them to a shoemaker to be stretched.

Match the Rest of Your Wardrobe: If you plan to spend a lot of money on shoes, make sure they can be used for a while. Consider your clothing palette. If you like purple high heels, but they do not match any of your clothes, resist the temptation. Following this same line of thinking, consider whether you need high heels, flat shoes, and boots in major shades of brown and black. You also need to add white and some accent colours to the equation. After choosing a colour, do not buy anything other than that palette.

If you purchase good quality shoes that will last you several years, you'll actually end up saving money in the long run. It may sound ironic, but one of the best ways to save money on shoes is to spend more on each pair.

Finally, shopping at the right time of the year can also save you more on shoes.Shop end-of-season sales for deals on quality classics. This is also an opportunity to pick up frivolous footwear for less. Clothing, shoes and accessories enter the store according to the season. For example, instead of buying spring shoes when the season comes, it is better to wait a few months and buy them when the price starts to drop. Even better, wait until the end of the season inventory  to clear out before purchasing shoes for the following year. However, don't wait too long if you wear a popular size, say anywhere from 6-1/2 to 8-1/2.
