Women, in particular, often have self-limiting beliefs, which can have serious negative consequences. Most young women use social media every day, and research suggests that looking for the ideal look-focused content is associated with poor body image.

Girls emerge from adolescence with a weak self-image, relatively low expectations from life and less confidence in themselves and their abilities than boys. In a culture saturated with digitally altered images of impossibly thin women, raising girls with high self-esteem can be really daunting. But as a parent, you have a big influence - both through what you say and what you do, as it is widely known that female role models can inspire women and help them cope with stressful situations. (Study extract from Australian Popular Science).

To progress on self-confidence, we need to challenge negative self-narrative (e.g. 'I'm not smart enough / not beautiful) and replace them with more favorable and optimistic self-talk as our beliefs about ourselves are important in shaping all kinds of important decisions, such as what colleges we apply to, which career paths we choose, and whether we will contribute ideas or try to compete for promotion, says Harvard Business School Assistant Professor Katherine Coffman.

When our self-esteem is higher, we not only feel better about ourselves, we are also more resilient. The main thing is improving self-esteem requires some form of work, as it involves the development and maintenance of healthy emotional habits, but doing so and especially doing it properly will yield a great emotional and mental return on your investment.
